Winter Madness [Through My Lens Nr. 134]

Winter has caught up with us. After a fairly sunny January and February, now the cold has returned, brought with it snow and winds. Of course winter can be beautiful. Some people like the snow and cold, others like to view it from a distance, while most prefer spring to start. I on the other hand am actively hoping that our orange and lemon trees in the garden won't suffer like last year (when we had to cut two down). The forecast is saying we will have temperatures below zero, so that will be fun, since the work week has just started. How is winter treating you? Of course those of you in the southern hemisphere are enjoying blissful summer days... o how I envy you.

Thank you all for joining me in another week of "Through My Lens". I am looking forward to your submissions this week!

How to add a link in a blogger comment

This is one of those quick tips that may be useful for those who do love to visit other blogs and comment and leave a signature or a link back to a post or their blog. I personally like to sign my comments with my name and link to my blog. Since blogger can be a bit difficult to navigate to, it's easier to leave your blog link in the comment so others can visit you back. Of course this works for any other links you want to put in your blogger comment.

How to add a link in a blogger comment

It's actually a piece of HTML code, which you can simply copy/paste into your comment. Here it is:
<a href="--insert the url of your link--">--Enter the title for your link--</a>

For example:
<a href=" http://www.mersad-photography.blogspot.com/ ">Mersad Donko Photography</a>
would turn out like this:

The code for a simply copy/paste is here:
<a href="url ">link title</a>

I hope that this will be of use to you for your future comments and visits to other blogs. As a signature I think it works so well and you can use it for many things. I keep the code with my signature ready in a notepad file on my desktop. I simply open it and copy/paste it where I need it without having to type it up every time.

Driving the Backroad [Through My Lens Nr. 133]

There is simply more to see when you drive down a backroad. Especially on a beautiful sunny day. Even though winter is still in full swing, this past weekend had at least one sunny day. I used it for a drive north, and one small stretch was driven on a small backroad that follows the river Neretva from the village Donja Jablanica to the town Jablanica. This was actually an old railroad where steam trains used to commute. It even ends with a narrow train tunnel, which you can see two images down. I hope you enjoyed the sunny winter shots. A new work week is ahead of us. I hope it will be a good one for you.

Thank you all for joining me in another week of "Through My Lens". I am looking forward to your submissions this week!

The 10 Best European Cities for Solo Travelers

I recently made my first real solo trip to Stockholm, and ever since I was thinking about solo travel. What cities could be visited in Europe that are easy to travel through in a few days, that are safe and that offer up lots to see and to do for the solo traveler. When choosing your ideal destination, think about whether youd prefer a large city with a simple public transportation system to help you cover more ground, or a smaller town thats easy to explore on foot. Also consider whether youre looking for an activity-filled city or one where you can kick back and relax. Watching your own back is always necessary, even in the most crime-free locations, but many European cities have safe reputations, so that you can focus more on where you go than how you go. Taking in all those considerations, heres a list of cities that are most welcoming to solo travelers, and where you can build your own ultimate Eurotrip.

The 10 Best European Cities for Solo Travelers

1. Copenhagen

Copenhagens two-line metro system may look sparse, but it gets you exactly where you need to go (including from the airport to town) and makes it incredibly easy to jet around the Danish city. For the spots in between, grab a City Bike (some now equipped with built-in GPS) and pedal right into the 242 miles of designated lanes. No wonder Copenhagens been named the best bike city in the world. For where to stay, eat, and drink, check out our guide to the city and our list of the best cocktail bars around.

2. Stockholm

The Swedish capital truly has it all: a cobblestoned old town with pedestrian-only roads, 57 bridges that stretch over its 14 islands, an amusement park dating back to 1880s, a bath house from 1904, and the most artistic subway stations, each decorated with its own theme. So it was no surprise that the free walking tours in town were dominated by solo travelers finding their own piece of the low-crime city. It's a place that is both unusual and very inviting.

3. Bruges

This is truly a fairy tale town. There are many shops in the Market Square, and beautiful ponds filled with the most immaculate swans. What better place to explore on your own than a city that invites you to be the star of your own fairytale adventure?

4. Dublin

The jolly Irish spirit isnt just the stuff of legends, the welcoming nature of the Dubliners should immediately make you feel like the city is your home, too. Leave your stress behind as you explore the centuries-old Dublin Castle and St. Patricks Cathedral, in the capital ranked one of the safest cities by a Post Office Travel Insurance Study. Pick up a three-day Leap Card at the airport for less than 20 Euros (which includes your bus ride from the airport) and youll be zipping through town in no time.

5. Vienna

I loved the freedom of being alone in the City of Music, where coffee is sipped and indulged in a Sacher torte in a traditional caf, people get lost on the grounds of Schnbrunn Palace, and take in a show at an opera house. With plenty of visitors and a burgeoning design scene, Austrias capital is bursting with charm. So its no wonder it ranked in the top five for personal safety rankings in a Mercer study for expats last year.

6. Bergen

The friendly waterfront Norwegian town is an idyllic spot for traveling alone. Its a cinch to locate the UNESCO Heritage wooden houses of Bryggen, the outdoor fish market, and Flibanen funicular, but just challenging enough to get to surrounding sights like the Mount Ulriken Cable Car and Troldhaugen, home of composer Edvard Grieg. In winter expect sightings of Aurora Borealis.

7. Berlin

Berlin is young and old, historic and modern, and classic and cutting edge, all at the same time. The city is still constantly changing, and there are so many sights that itll inevitably be difficult to fit it all into your schedule. The Circus Hotel offers single rooms in both its hotel and hostel (and has its own useful C-Wiki, a simple guide to the citys best). From there take on a city tour with them to get the lay of the land the first day. Once situated, run between sights like the Berlin Walls East Side Gallery and the Brandenburg Gate, snacking on currywurst along the way.

8. Reykjavik

With Iceland earning top honors as the most peaceful country in Europe according to last years Global Peace Index, safety is rarely a concern on the island nation. Flights are as low as $442 in the summer months, when daylight can last up to 21 hours. While the capital itself can be pricey, there are ways to navigate the high exchange rate: Two companies offer free city walking tours (theres also a pub crawl tour for $16), a bed in a hostel starts at $27, and the most popular meal in town is the Baejarins Beztu Pysur hot dog stand, made famous by Bill Clinton and more recently, Kim Kardashian.

9. Lucerne

Follow in Mark Twains steps in this tourist-friendly town nestled in central Switzerland, on the northern tip of Lake Lucerne. The charming covered Chapel Bridge and Water Tower sit in the heart of the mountaintop city, making the small town an effortless getaway for first-time solo travelers. The railroad station is in walking distance of Old Town, and the entire city is extremely easy to expore by foot.

10. Prague

The Czech Republic capital is a manageable size, with major sites concentrated within walking distance. Whichever side of the Charles Bridge you stay on, youre just steps away from Old Town and the Prague Castle, both of which provided a full days worth of exploration for me. Just a stroll away on the castle side is the Petrn funicular, where I took in hilltop views of the citys orange rooftops, Gothic cathedrals, Baroque churches, and Renaissance palaces. And throughout town, youll find stands to buy affordable concert tickets in exclusive venues, like the stunning show in the Clementinums Mirror Chapel.

I hope these cities will be of inspiration for your future travels.

Weekend of Food [Through My Lens Nr. 132]

Over this past weekend I was both in Sarajevo and Mostar, going out, but mostly eating my way though the weekend. It's cold outside after all and you can't spend the whole day in the house. That's what I keep telling myself at least. The first two images are from the Burger Bar in Sarajevo. It's fairly new and they serve really nice American style burgers. Having eaten a lot of them in the USA I have to say these are very good. Nice crispy potatoes on the side as well. Back in Mostar a few days later I visited the newly opened Choco Caffe. They serve luscious and delicious crepes as well as waffles. I had Nutella and cookie crepes and they came with ice cream. After all of that food it's time for a big walk. I hope these don't make you too hungry. I know they make my hungry again when looking :)

Dreaming of Summer

When the winter days become long, grey and cold, escaping visually to warmer days has always been a habit of mine. Though I do not look forward to the heat of summer (and actually like fresh days), I do love the ease of summer, lighter clothes and the carelessness that comes with that season. I guess I'm mostly fond of spring and autumn, but right now I crave the warm days. Especially after the flu season bound us to the bed for a long time. I guess I mostly yearn for the outdoors and I hope that this weekend will bring with it some new adventure. For now let us take a look back at summer and Primosten in Croatia.

February Days [Through My Lens Nr. 131]

We have had the worst sweater weather for the last week. Over the weekend the sun came out for a couple of hours and that was it. While the flu I had is gone, the rest of my family got it as well, so it hasn't been fun at all. I just hope that in a few days all of that will be behind us. Our puppies left for the Netherlands and we are currently waiting for confirmation of their arrival. I hope to post a final update, as soon as we get some images. Thank you all who helped us out. In the meantime here are a few shots from nature outside our mountain house, where winter is still lingering around.
